Heterogeneous Server Monitoring using Online System Center

One of our friend had a problem. They have a hosting business with lots of Windows servers but also lots of GNU/Linux servers as well. They needed a monitoring solution that could easily give views to the hosted servers for them but also to their end customers. Onrego’s Online System Center, Server and Service Monitoring does the trick!

One great thing to know is that System Center Operations Manager 2012 R2 does support several Unixes as well as GNU/Linux distributions. While Onrego’s Online System Center cloud service does include the latest version of System Center Operations Manager, we were able to start monitoring our friends’ hosting company’s GNU/Linux machines.

Using one cloud based monitoring solution for Windows and Unix/GNU/Linux servers (and for network devices if wanted) allows us to create comprehensive views to delivered services, that consists of several components, such as Windows-based database servers and GNU/Linux based front-end (read: web) servers.

Using Onrego Dashboard, a HTML5 browsed based dashboard, you can view alerts, services and servers using your mobile phone, tablet or of course your desktop or laptop computer.

Greetings from Microsoft Technet Tour 2013!

Microsoft Technet Tour 2013 is on the road on this autumn in Finland! With topics such as Microsoft Cloud OS, Windows Server 2012 R2, System Center 2012 R2 and Hyper-V, Onrego is also attending the tour.

On last week’s Friday, Microsoft released R2 versions of Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012. While most of the IT pros around world started to downloadthe bits, we packed our packs and headed to a tour around Finland to talk about the new features and possibilities Windows Server, Hyper-V, System Center and Windows Azure to hundreads of Finnish IT pros and business leaders.

Microsoft Technet Tour 2013

The tour stops at the following cities: Vaasa 10/22, Oulu 10/23, Lappeenranta 10/29, Kuopio 10/30 and Jyväskylä 10/31. More details about the locations and time schedule can be found from Microsoft Finland’s Technet Blog article.

Microsoft’s Mr. Juha Karppinen opens the event with a presentation on Microsoft CloudOS followed with Mr. Antti Alila and Mr. Timo Salminen on Windows Server, Hyper-V and Microsoft VDI. Guys do also have couple of great demos of Windows Azure Multi-Factor authentication and Windows 8.1 Workplace Join and they even managed to show a demo in which an iPad (first time ever?) was used to access data at the workplace using Workplace Join and Windows Azure Multi-Factor authentication.

After a break Neoxen Oy‘s Esa Tervo gave a presentation of Windows Azure IaaS and how Neoxen has implemented Sharepoint sites on Azure Iaas and Mr. Kalle Rissanen from ArrowECS explained how to benefit from Veeam’s products on managing Hyper-V and VMware backups.

On the tour, Onrego’s presentation is about implementing self-service and automation using System Center Service Manager and System Center Orchestrator with half a dozen case examples of what Onrego has already implemented to its customers both as a cloud service (Onrego Online System Center) and as on-premises.

Scripting = Problem Solving

In one project we have been doing for one of our client, the world class scripting aid was needed. Who did we choose for the job? Me :).

Well let’s be honest. I wasn’t that keen on starting scripting because it feels like ages ago when I last wrote a few lines of code. But what can you do when especially MY skills were needed (according to my colleague – a great salesman)?

The job was to clone users from one Active Directory forest to another while updating group memberships. Migration was not an answer for the matters I’m not going to discuss in this space. Somehow I chose PowerShell and CSVDE and LDIFDE for the job. CSVDE was user to create new users and LDIFDE to update group memberships. And PowerShell was used to orchestrate the whole thing. Sounded like a plan. But not exactly.

The thing I like about scripting is that it’s actually problem solving. Not writing a code. And that is one thing I think I’m good at. Solving problems.

Another great thing about scripting is that you always learn something new. When you discover that you knew that you knew everything but it turned out that you know nothing, it keeps your boots safely on the ground.

One lesson I learned this time was that if you have Scandinavian characters in your group names, LDIFDE wants to convert the strings to base64. That complicates things a bit when you want to do string manipulation with members. One free advice: you can find convert-data cmdlet from /n software‘s NetCmdLets package :).

New Release Candidates – Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8

If you googled and ended up to this page, no this page is not about RTM’s of Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8. This is about RC’s, as there are other pages about beta’s and beta2’s and there will be about RC2’s. Hold on, RTM’s are coming in the future.

Microsoft has just released the Release Candidates of the upcoming Windows Server 2011 and Windows 8. This means that the products are soon ready to be released for the manufacturing.

For IT pro’s, next season is going to get pretty busy because of the new server and workstation releases but also because the next generation of communication products such as Exchange and Sharepoint are next to be rolled out of factory. Including the System Center product line and the Private Cloud concept, there will be hectic times. This, of course, means that customers must be willing to buy these new products and their new features.
